So we, stay there from 1980 to now, to 2019. We migrated to Dominican Republic because my father sister, my aunt, she, she was traveling to Italy and she met a Dominican guy in a ship. So, she met this Dominican guy and they kind of like each other. So after a couple of years, they got married and she move to the Dominican Republic. That was 1976. And then, 1979 my father went to visit for Christmas, and they offer him a job over there. By that time in Chile, there was Pinochet in the government. So, it wasn't the best time for us living over there. We found that was a better way of living for us, my dad decided and my mom. They decide to move to Dominican Republic, they made a good choice, it was much better at that time they were doing very good. Now we didn't find the Dominican Republic was a safe place. Since we got married we were talking about moving to a better place to get a better life for us. My father was born in Spain, and at the age of 16, he escaped the crude reality of Spain. You know, in his region, there were lots of problems at the time, and people were going hungry, and so on. So he was the eldest of his family, and he said, "Okay, I have to go and try to find a future and see if I can help my family," and so on. So he jumped... Well he went on a ship, and he crossed the Atlantic at the age of 16. No cellphone, no, you know, no bank account, no easy transfer of money, and so on. And when I embarked into this adventure, I said, "He did it, and it was very difficult times. This is so much easier. I think we can do it." That was a little bit... You know, like, he gave me courage so to speak. My grandfather from my mother's side, he was a sailor. So he had traveled the world. He was also from Spain, and, eventually, he came to the Dominican Republic after living in different places. So I think we have that in my family. And then my husband is going to tell you his migration story as well. As far as migrating to Canada, I don't think it's confusing at all. I think everything is very straightforward. Very transparent. But you have to meet the standards. So if you have your points for language, for education, for even savings, you know? Then you get your points, and then you will be picked from the pool. It's straightforward in that sense. But, you know, if you don't have enough funds, for example, or if you don't have the languages, or the education, then you don't get enough points, and then it's difficult and frustrating for so many people that would like to come here. But this is not possible because of the international community, yeah, they go in and talk to the people at the top and do it their own way. Not talking with the real civil society, the people the grassroots, which is the way you bring about peace. Talk to the people about how they want to be governed. The people in power are focusing on the production money. Everybody wants to be wealthy as soon as possible. This is what is taking place, that is why the war is going on. There's only 200 kilometres of paved roads in South Sudan right now with the rain and mud is very hard to access communities to, to deliver health care, have to do a lot of it by air, which is costly and they don't have big fleets to to do it so that the country is being strangled people with illness and mental illnesses out in the rural areas I just came a a refugee because on the ground that I came through Egypt and Egypt you have to apply normally as a refugee. I was an international student and I went to study at University in Toronto. In Belize, though we don't necessarily have higher learning beyond maybe your first or second basic years of post-secondary studies. The reason I chose Canada, with my background in history and taking political science courses, sociology courses, this was fresh after 9-11, so I grew up in that era of transition. That, and then the reactions you how many of our global powers reacted to 9-11, the US and Canada, war in the Middle East and all of that stuff, so I just at the time I thought my values were not quite there. Without realizing it now, I'm the type of person who I like to ask a lot of questions, and I was, without knowing it, asking myself questions like, "Well why is the reaction to just go to war and why is it what?". I was like, "Okay, this is not what I thought." And I heard multiple languages on that and I was like, "Okay, maybe it's because I'm in an airport, I don't know." And then I went to, I was staying on residence at the university and same thing, it was so multicultural. It was incredible. Sorry I said that you should play with your own people." Like, "No, it's fine." I'm not going to get angry. Or if we had a good game, they would shake my hand and be like, "Oh, you know what? Again, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say that." "It's fine." And they would invite me again the next week, that's how I was back then. There will be always a positive side to everything. There will be always positive people, we should always ... even though if there are bad people, understand that at the end of the day, we should accept and give forgiveness. My grandfather went there in 1819, to start a grocery store, because the migration pattern for colonization was, the British would come and conquer, then they would need to have people build a railroad. Because they did India first, they had all the people in India who basically could manage and build a railroad. So they brought a whole bunch of them to Uganda, but the British didn't want them to use their facilities, so they had to bring infrastructure because the white people did not want non-whites going to the same store. That's how my grandfather migrated. Then the foreign powers, when they gave independence, to Uganda, where there was a movement of socialism in Tanzania by Julius Nyerere. They were afraid of that. They were afraid of, because the president at that time were both, he was pro-Nyerere. They hired a private soldier and made him head of the armed force. They came in and took over completely and it was tragic because in about six months, people who had been there for two generations were asked to leave. So, we were basically the army comes in, you give them your key of the house, key to your car. You're allowed to take the two suitcases and then you're gone. And then so, I was fortunate because I came at a time in '70-'71 in Canada where immigration was really key until it took me no time to get a job. I goes offered three or four jobs, those kinds of things. And then I started to, I worked at a cross cultural centre in London, Ontario and then I got involved. But the thing about this, the thing about migration is that an experience me is it takes seven years, takes seven years, they've done psychology, they've done studies. It takes seven years for someone to settle. And that's like where you are not constantly making a home references. They compare it to loss of a family member take seven years to get over. But I stayed during the war and because the war ended, like '96, let's say, so 10 years after I came to Canada, and I came because of love. Well, there are some easy things. There are some things that you struggle more or less. I was really evaluating my decision. So I was going through pros and cons for over a year before I migrated. And so I was doing some research and what can I do, how to, what, how to start my life in Canada and stuff like that. So I got myself familiar as with, with this situation here. So it wasn't like everything was strange to me. But still there were some, some things like that are different than back home. You know, the transportation is a little bit different.
